  2D ultrathin metal–organic layers (MOLs) with bis-metallic sites have been developed for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction. The expanded checkerboard represents the 2D MOL structure. The two differently colored pawns represent bis-metallic sites, the cream one being responsible for transferring electrons to CO2, and the cyan one denoting protons coupling with CO2. The ingenious layout makes them work synergistically resulting in a magical effect that is crucial for efficient CO2 photoreduction to CO.
